Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a naturally occurring chemical compound composed of a carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. Carbon dioxide is the most significant long-lived greenhouse gas in the Earth’s atmosphere, and is a critical element in the carbon cycle. Natural sources of carbon dioxide emissions include decomposition, ocean release and respiration. Natural sinks of carbon dioxide include photosynthesis by terrestrial plants and absorption by the ocean through physicochemical and biological processes.

The natural exchange of carbon dioxide between air, water, plants and soil remained in balance for thousands of years. But since the Industrial Revolution, anthropogenic emissions—primarily through the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation—have significantly increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, resulting in global warming. Therefore, precisely measuring carbon dioxide is important to better understand its natural exchange in the environment and the effect of human activity on the carbon cycle and on global warming.
